Qualitative Variables

This module is designed for the descriptive analysis of categorical (non-numerical) data. Use the sidebar panel to select your variables before exploring the summaries in the main panel.

1. Select Your Variable

• Use the Qualitative variable dropdown menu in the sidebar to choose the specific categorical variable you wish to analyze from your dataset.

2. Grouping Data (Optional)

• If you want to compare your chosen variable across different sub-categories, check the Statistics by group? box.
• Once checked, a new dropdown menu titled Group by will appear. You can select one or more categorical variables here to partition your data for comparison.

3. Navigate the Analysis Tabs

• After setting up your inputs in the sidebar, use the tabs in the main area to view the results:
  • Tabular Summary: Generate absolute and relative frequency tables to see how your categories are distributed.
  • Graphic Summaries: Visualize the distribution of your categories using appropriate charts (such as bar charts or pie charts).

Tabular Summary (Qualitative)

The Tabular Summary tab generates interactive tables to help you understand the distribution and proportions of your categorical data. The type of table displayed depends on your sidebar settings.

1. Frequency Table (Ungrouped Data)

• If you are analyzing a single variable without any grouping, the application will display a standard Frequency table.
• This table provides a straightforward summary of counts (absolute frequency) and percentages (relative frequency) for each category within your selected variable.

2. Two-Way Table (Grouped Data)

• If you checked the Statistics by group? option in the sidebar, the view will automatically change to a Two-way table (also known as a contingency table or cross-tabulation).
• This allows you to examine the relationship between your primary qualitative variable and your selected grouping categories simultaneously.

Graphic Summary (Qualitative)

The Graphic Summary tab allows you to visualize the distribution of your categorical data. You can easily switch between different chart types and fully customize their appearance.

1. Select Graph Type

• Use the Select: dropdown menu to choose your preferred visualization: Barplot or Pie chart.
• Toggle the Horizontal switch if you want to flip the orientation of your Barplot.

2. Customize Your Graph

• Click the Customize graph button (marked with a fish icon) to open the styling panel.
• Styling Options: Depending on the graph type and whether your data is grouped, you can adjust:
  • Aesthetics: Modify the Theme, Font, and Font Size.
  • Colors: For ungrouped barplots, pick specific fill and line colors. For grouped barplots or pie charts, select a color Palette to distinguish categories.
  • Labels: Rename your axis titles using the xlab and ylab fields.
  • Details: Fine-tune the line width, point angles, and alpha (transparency).
• Reset: Click the yellow Reset to Initial State button to instantly clear your customizations and return to the default look.

3. Exporting

• Once your chart looks exactly how you want it, click the blue Download Graph button to save the image directly to your device for use in reports or presentations.
